It is more essential than ever to be part of the legislative process, and the best way for flavour companies, in the UK, is through BEMA the British Essence Manufacturers’ Association.

BEMA exists to represent the interests of the UK flavouring industry. It concerns itself with all issues that are relevant to companies, large and small, who manufacturing and/or sell flavourings in the UK.

BEMA provides the best way for flavour companies to:

Be aware of and prepare for changes in the EU and UK regulatory regimes.

  • Participate in a concentrated industry response to those proposed changes, aimed at achieving the most workable regulatory framework for the future.
  • Be aware of UK, European and broader global issues affecting the flavour business. Joining BEMA is the only way to obtain membership of the European (EFFA) and global (IOFI) flavour industry associations.
  • Monitor and compare demands upon our industry from major customers, and where appropriate develop common industry positioning to deal with these.
  • Be aware of consumer issues that may impact our industry over time; good examples being the growth in the organic movement, and the concern with GM foods.
  • Keep up-to-date with all other indirect regulatory issues affecting the flavour industry by virtue of what it does; for example Health & Safety, Food Safety or Excise Duty arrangements.

We have recently ensured that it is financially attractive for the smaller companies in our Industry to join BEMA and obtain current industry data, by attending the Technical committee and receiving the BEMA emails which contain information on all current areas of interest for the UK, European and Global industry.

In short, there is no other way to be certain that you know what affects your business. Come and join the rest of your industry in BEMA now!
